​

We see less in the sun than we do in the darkness. The sun is a spotlight that only reveals fragments of our world. Sunlight exposes us to the pressure of being seen. 

We constantly perform and posture in sunlight under the direction of observation, even if no one or nothing is there to see us. As the morning sun rises, we are subjected to restlessness. Even after the advent of artificial light, sunlight still conjures ‭an anxiety of exerting ourselves ‬within its limits. ‭“Hurry, the sun's going down!” As the sun sets, dusk and nightfall usher in ‬surrender. ‭“‬What more can we do?‭”‬ There is a release with accepting darkness. Without the spotlight glaring ‭at‬ us, we can be honest and vulnerable. No more pressure to perform. No more threats to know that we are being seen. Darkness holds all the secrets and truths that cannot be seen in the light. There is no “total” ‭sunlight or ‬“‭complete‬”‭ daylight. Only ‬total darkness. Complete darkness.  

Seen in the Light, Known in the Dark‭ brings attention to the limitations of light as a partial ‬lens or filter for understanding, and darkness as a vessel for holding everything‭. ‬Drawing inspiration from the cycles between day and night, works in this exhibition follow this same arc. What is seen in the light slowly transitions through an increasingly darker gradient into what is known in the dark.
